With a price tag that's much closer to a Honda CR-VââŹâ˘s than a Porsche MacanââŹâ˘s, the Mazda is accessible to the same demographic group as the former, but it's also able to the impress those who fall into the latter's tax bracket. The CX-5's base four-cylinder engine doesn't highlight its dynamic driving personality as well as the optional turbocharged four, but all models have a ride-and-handling balance that's unrivaled in this segment. There are more practical alternatives, especially when it concerns cargo space, but no competitors can match the Mazda's elegantly styled and richly appointed interior. The 2022 CX-5's transcendent traits simply outpace all of its classmates, so we put it on our 2022 Editors' Choice New for 2022?For 2022, Mazda massages the CX-5's already attractive bodywork with smoother surfaces on the front and rear. Its grille also becomes more distinctive with a new three-dimensional mesh texture and wings that extend outwards toward the reshaped LED headlights. Inside, the seats have been updated to be more supportive. Mazda says it also retuned the transmission to be smoother and more responsive. Likewise, suspension improvements are said to make the CX-5 handle and ride even better than before. All models now come standard with all-wheel drive, and the SUV's driving behavior is more adjustable thanks to new drive-mode settings. The Grand Touring Reserve trim is now called Turbo, and the top-tier Signature trim has body-color cladding instead of the previous dark color. The turbo four's engine horsepower increases by 6 to 256 horses when using premium and Which One to Buy We think the new Turbo trim best exemplifies the CX-5. With the upgraded 256-hp turbocharged engine, its quickness better corresponds with its athletic handling. Its exterior is elegantly sporty with trim-specific gloss-black accents. Its interior mirrors that sportiness with red accents and stitching. Engine, Transmission, and PerformanceThe CX-5's standard 187-hp four-cylinder engine has great throttle response when pulling away from stoplights or hustling around town, so it feels quicker than it actually is. It's at higher speeds, such as when trying to pass or merge onto the freeway, that it feels underpowered. The 256-hp turbocharged version we tested provided much quicker acceleration. Both engines pair with a snappy six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. You don't need to drive the CX-5 hard to enjoy it or to appreciate its excellence. Sure, its precise steering and composed cornering make for one helluva Sunday cruise. But it also soaks up rough roads without commotion and has the ride quality of crossovers that cost twice as much. This harmonious interplay of dynamics is unrivaled by its competitors. Pavement imperfections are isolated, road noise is minimal, and the damping is neither stiff nor floaty. At the same time, the Mazda comes alive on curvy roads. The electrically assisted steering provides satisfying responses. The Signature model we tested had a reassuring brake-pedal feel that operated without delay and without being too touchy when you apply the Economy and Real-World MPGWith two engine options, the CX-5 has two fuel-economy ratings. The base engine is rated at 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The more powerful turbocharged engine is rated at 22 mpg city and 27 highway. We've tested both on our 75-mph highway route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, and the standard engine returned 32 mpg compared with the turbo four's 30 mpg result. First-rate materials and a fabulous layout make it feel especially upscale. The floor-hinged accelerator pedal feels better than the more common version that is suspended above the floor, the well-crafted steering wheel is directly in front of the driver and not offset at a slight angle, and all of the front-seat armrests are at the same height for optimal comfort. Sacrifices come in small packages in this case, the CX-5 held just nine carry-on suitcases behind its rear seats in our testing. The storage bay does benefit from a completely flat load floor. There are also several nooks and crannies in the cabin to store smartphones and other small items. For instance, the center console has a deep tray at the front and a useful bin with a removable shelf. Infotainment and ConnectivityEvery model boasts a infotainment display that's primarily manipulated through a rotary controller and volume knob on the center console. The interface also operates through voice commands and buttons on the steering wheel. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the board. The CX-5 comes with Mazda Connected Services that includes access to remote vehicle functions via a smartphone app and a subscription-based Wi-Fi and Driver-Assistance FeaturesThe CX-5 comes standard with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technology and some other optional assists. The Mazda CX-5 isn't the newest, highest-tech, most fuel efficient, or most practical compact SUVâbut it's definitely the sportiest. Its shortcomings are few, and it remains one of the top-rated vehicles in our compact SUV rankings. For 2021 the CX-5 has been updated with a larger infotainment screen, a new trim level, and a very slight price increase. What are the differences between the 2021 CX-5 trim levels, and which is best? Let's get into Mazda CX-5 Sport Pros and ConsSport is a fitting name for the base trim, as it enjoys the same sporty chassis setup as its higher-end counterparts. It's powered by a I-4 that turns the front wheels, with all-wheel drive optionally available. This engine doesn't make the CX-5 particularly efficient, scoring 25/31 mpg city/highway with FWD and 24/30 mpg with it rolls on 17-inch alloy wheels and has LED headlights. Only black and light blue are included as exterior paint colors; metallic white and red are available at extra cost. Inside, the climate control and cloth-upholstered seats are manually adjustable. Two front-row USB ports, a gauge cluster display, and a four-speaker audio system are standard. The second-row seats recline and have fold-down release handles in the cargo in Sport trim, the CX-5's features indicate Mazda's premium approach. The body-color side mirrors have built-in turn signals, and dual chrome-finished exhaust tips look sporty. Inside, the infotainment display is hard to miss, while the leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob feel nicer than the plastic parts found in some competitors. Like all CX-5 trims, driver assist and active safety features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic emergency braking are included. These help the CX-5 earn top safety ratings from the IIHS and its solid dynamic attributes and driver assist tech, the roughly $26,500 CX-5 Sport appeals for an entry-level model. We wouldn't be disappointed to choose it, but it's pretty Mazda CX-5 Touring Pros and ConsThe Touring trim adds features that help the CX-5 feel less stripped out. These include hands-free keyless entry, illuminated sun visor mirrors, a six-speaker audio system, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Up front, the driver's seat gets power adjustability, and both seats gain three-level heating. The second row is upgraded with air vents, a folding center armrest with cupholders, and tinted side windows. All seats are upholstered in leatherette with faux suede accents. Metallic silver and dark blue are added to the standard paint choices, and dark gray becomes available at extra approximately $28,000, the 2021 CX-5 Touring trim adds features that are nice to have but nothing that's absolutely Mazda CX-5 Carbon Edition Pros and ConsMazda might like you to think the 2021 CX-5 Carbon Edition is some sort of lightweight or extra-sporty model, but it's mechanically identical to any other trim in the lineup. No carbon fiber hereâthat "Carbon" bit supposedly relates to the common color of the element black, like coal. Indeed, the Carbon Edition's grille, side mirror caps, and 19-inch wheels are finished in black. It's coated exclusively in Polymetal Gray metallic paint, which isn't offered on any other changes include black or red leather seating upholstery, red stitching on the shift knob and steering wheel, and black trim panels. But the Carbon Edition isn't only about stylingâit's equipped with a moonroof, power rear liftgate, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and 10-speaker Bose audio system. The front passenger seat gains power adjustability, and two USB ports are added to the second at just under $30,000, the CX-5 Carbon Edition adds features that boost its daily usability and enjoyment. If it's in your budget, it's worth a lookâso long as you vibe with its blacked-out styling Mazda CX-5 Carbon Turbo Edition Pros and ConsThis trim is just like the CX-5 Carbon Edition but withâyou guessed itâa turbocharged engine. It's the first CX-5 trim that's offered with Mazda's turbocharged I-4, which bumps power to as much as 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft with premium fuel from 186 hp and 186 lb-ft as standard. It's a significant boost that changes the CX-5's driving demeanorâthat is, it's much increased performance decreases fuel economy The Carbon Edition Turbo and other CX-5 trims that use this engine are rated at 23/28 mpg with FWD, and 22/27 mpg with for the 2021 CX-5 Carbon Edition Turbo start at just under $32,000. The trim's increased power and torque give it enthusiast appeal. However, the non-turbo Carbon Edition still has fun handling and the same features. It just isn't as Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Pros and ConsThe premium feel increases in the CX-5 Grand Touring trim. It rolls on bright-finished 19-inch wheels and gains upgraded LED lighting headlights with DRL accents and curve-adaptive functionality, front foglights, and taillights. Inside, the seats are upholstered in black or beige leather. The gauge cluster information display increases to inches in size. It's also the first CX-5 trim that includes paddle shifters, which work pretty well to control the somewhat outdated six-speed automatic. Mazda tosses in a three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio on the Grand Touring with these features, the roughly $31,500 CX-5 Grand Touring's price slightly undercuts that of the Carbon Edition Turbo. However, the Grand Touring model is equipped with the naturally aspirated engineâ Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve Pros and ConsIn Grand Touring Reserve trim, the CX-5 becomes a more worthy competitor to compact luxury SUVs. It's equipped with the turbocharged engine and AWD. Comfort improves by way of the heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats. Technology upgrades include a head-up display and infotainment voice command functionality. Power-folding side mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer add just over $37,000, the CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve trim takes a major price hike over the Grand Touring model. With its powertrain and upscale features, that increase seems justified. It's expensive for a CX-5 but a relative bargain against similarly equipped luxury Mazda CX-5 Signature Pros and ConsAs Mazda plots its move upmarket, its luxurious aims are indicated by the range-topping CX-5 Signature trim. Its 19-inch wheels have a dark silver finish, but for some reason metallic silver paint is unavailable. However its interior is covered in lovely dark brown premium leather upholstery, complemented by genuine layered wood trim. Technology enhancements include a 360-degree parking camera system and road sign recognition capability. The interior overhead lights are replaced with LEDs. Front and rear parking sensors and rear automatic braking help prevent scrapes and scuffs. The turbocharged engine and AWD are standard 2021 CX-5 Signature runs for about $38,500, not a huge lift over the Grand Touring Reserve model. But as nice as that brown leather is, we question if that addition and a few others are worth 2021 Mazda CX-5 Model Is Best? The CX-5 is truly an enthusiast's crossover, and for that reason we think it's best when equipped with the punchy turbocharged engine. As such, we're inclined toward the Carbon Edition Turbo trimâit has that power. What it doesn't have is all the upscale features of higher-end models, but the many inclusions make it a compelling value. The Carbon Edition's catch is that it's only available in Polymetal Gray paint, which won't suit everyone's tastes. Regardless, the CX-5's great looks and dynamics make it a worthy rival to SUVs in its class or even those above.
Vehicle ReviewsWe drove the 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo for a few days. Check out the few pros and cons that we found. Published on January 14, 2023 2 min read We spent a little time with the 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo and enjoyed every second of it. The CX-50 provides a sporty yet comfortable ride and excels in some ways but not in others. Here are a few pros and cons we found during our time with the 2023 CX-50 Turbo. 1. Con The infotainment system is annoying to use 2023 Mazda CX-50 Mazda We have complained about Mazdaâs infotainment systems so much that itâs almost just a cheap shot at this point. However, itâs still worth pointing out, considering Mazda has yet to change the system in a 2023 model like the CX-50. Case in point, the CX-50âs infotainment system consists of a display that sits in the center of the dashboard. Itâs not a touchscreen, though. Instead, you have to control it with a knob on the center console. Typically, knob-controlled systems arenât that bad; however, the Mazda system requires too many clicks to get to specific menus. Itâs even cumbersome to change radio stations, which requires taking your eyes off the road for too long. We hope that Mazda will change this system in the next generation of the CX-50. 2. Con The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is a little thirsty 2023 Mazda CX-50 Joe Santos, MotorBiscuit A four-cylinder engine powers the 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo, but we wish it were a little more fuel-efficient. The EPA rates the CX-50âs fuel economy at 23 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. In our real-world testing, we averaged around 23 mpg in mixed driving conditions. Thatâs not terrible, but it could be better. If you do a lot of city driving, just know that the CX-50 could be a little thirsty. 3. Pro The Mazda CX-50 is sized well, even for tall passengers 2023 Mazda CX-50 Mazda The Mazda CX-50 is the brandâs second-largest SUV. It slots between the CX-5 and the CX-9, which means that itâs large and roomy enough to fit tall passengers. Thereâs plenty of leg and headroom in the first and second rows. We imagine that passengers around 6 feet, 4 inches tall, and shorter should be able to fit just fine. 4. Pro The CX-50 drives well on snowy roads 2023 Mazda CX-50 Joe Santos, MotorBiscuit During our time with the Mazda CX-50, we were able to take it on a few snow-covered roads. We werenât exactly driving in deep snow; however, the CX-50âs i-Activ AWD system did well on the snowy roads we drove on. From a dead stop, the carâs all-season tires gripped the road quickly, which was partly assisted by the all-wheel drive system. 5. Pro The Mazda CX-50âs turbocharged engine provides plenty of power 2023 Mazda CX-50 Joe Santos, MotorBiscuit The 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo puts out 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, which is the same engine thatâs used across the product lineup. In the CX-50, the engine works really well, as itâs able to pull the little SUV up inclines and onto the freeway with ease. Anyone looking to get into a Mazda CX-50 should consider the extra power over the base engine â especially if they live in higher elevations. The pros and cons of driving the 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo The 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo is an excellent choice for anyone in need of a small SUV. The pros of driving it outweigh the cons by a large margin. If you donât mind the infotainment system and the gas mileage, the CX-50 Turbo could be for you.
